Cowboy butter takes steak to a whole new level! If you’ve never heard of it, It’s just a compound butter packed with delicious ingredients! Even if you’re someone who enjoys their steak in its purest form and unadulterated, you’ll still be impressed at how this elevates those juicy steak flavors!

Ingredients in cowboy butter:

  • Butter (of course!)
  • lemon zest and juice
  • garlic
  • parsley
  • chives
  • dijon mustard
  • cayenne pepper (optional)
  • paprika
  • salt
  • papper
  • worcestershire

You’ll want to prep the ingredients. You’ll want to zest the lemon before cutting and juicing it, mince the garlic, and chop the parsley and chives. Add everything to a bowl with the softened butter along with the remaining ingredients.

Once you have everything in a bowl with the butter, you can take a fork and just smash everything together. You might notice a little bit of liquid from the lemon juice and worcestershire but that’s totally fine. Just do your best to incorporate as much as you can.

Now after you’ve mixed everything together, you can either serve it just like this (softened and in a bowl), or you can make the “fancy” butter log for slicing over steak.

To make the butter log of cowboy butter, lay out a long piece of plastic wrap and scoop the butter into the center of the wrap

Take the plastic wrap and fold it over the butter then roll it up like a candy wrapper. You can then twist the ends to make it a nice tight roll of butter.

How to use cowboy butter:

When your steaks are almost done cooking, take about a 1/2 inch slice of cowboy butter and place it on top of the steak while it finishes cooking. As the butter melts, you can spoon the drippings over the top of the steak.  You can also add a pat of the butter when the steaks have finished cooking and allow it to melt over the steaks as they rest. (don’t forget…steaks should always rest a few minutes after cooking to reabsorb juices)
